Vladimir Putin backed US Vice-President Kamala Harris to win the US election to help Donald Trump emerge victorious, the Russian President’s former speechwriter has claimed.
The Kremlin chief said “we will support her” because “she laughs so expressively and infectiously that it means that everything is fine with her.”
He added: “Ultimately, the choice is up to the American people, and we will respect that choice.”
Abbas Gallyamov, Putin’s speechwriter from 2008-2012, tells the Daily Express that this is a ploy to help Trump win.
He adds Putin is “dreaming of a Trump presidency.”
He said: “I think Putin is trying to help Trump. Making it more difficult for Democrats to criticise the Republicans for colluding with autocrats.
“No doubt that Putin is literally dreaming about Trump. Trump doesn’t care for democracy thus unlike other US politicians he treats Putin as a respectable world-class politician, while for others he is a kind of illegitimate outcast who might be powerful but still marginal.
“This methodological difference leads to a lot of practical results: starting with the possibility to ‘divide the world’ like great empires of the past and ending with refusal to support Russian opposition.
“In general, Putin can say ‘even in America’ intolerant, aggressive authoritarian approaches are winning and that will make Putin’s stance in the eyes of the Russian public much more legitimate.
“America still serves as the beacon of democracy for many Russians and if its lights are getting dim the powers of authoritarianism increase.”
Putin said in February that he would prefer Joe Biden to win before the US President withdrew himself from the race.
US intelligence agencies have claimed that Russia ran a disinformation campaign to help Trump win against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
The Kremlin denies interfering in any US election.
