Brits in popular destination told to expect power outages and compulsory curfew | World | News

Britons currently in Ecuador have been issued an essential warning as the country faces widespread power outages, curfews, and water rationing in the coming days.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice, alerting holidaymakers about the disruptions set to impact the South American nation.

According to the FCDO, power outages are scheduled to occur nationwide on Wednesday, September 18, as well as from Monday, September 23, to Thursday, September 26, between 10pm and 6am each day.

In addition to the power cuts, a curfew will be enforced during the same hours in several provinces, including Guayas, Los Rios, Manabi, Orellana, Santa Elena, El Oro, and the district of Camilo Ponce Enriquez in Azuay province.

The FCDO anticipates the curfew to be repeated from September 23 to 26, though confirmation is pending.

Heightened police and military presence will be in place to ensure public security during this period.

The FCDO advised Britons travelling to the airport during curfew hours to carry a copy of their flight itinerary to avoid complications.

Additionally, the FCDO warned that water rationing would be in effect, particularly in Guayas and Pichincha provinces, urging residents and visitors to check with their local water suppliers for updates on supply cuts.

Energy rationing has also been flagged as an ongoing issue in Ecuador, with sporadic power cuts affecting various parts of the country.

The FCDO has recommended keeping updated through local power providers’ websites or social media channels for information on scheduled outages.

Ecuador is a popular destination for British holidaymakers, offering stunning beaches, rich biodiversity, the Amazon rainforest, and the world-renowned Galapagos Islands.

However, tourists are urged to consult the FCDO’s latest travel advice, including information on entry requirements, safety and security, and regional risks.

The FCDO continues to advise against all but essential travel to some parts of the country amid the current state of emergency.

For those planning trips to Ecuador, staying informed of the latest government advice is essential to ensure a safe and smooth travel experience.
