Abandoned village in Greece unearthed for first time in 44 years | World | News

Water scarcity in Greece’s popular artificial lake has led to the reemerging of an abandoned sunken village of Kallio. The chilling discovery shed light on the dire water situation in the popular tourist destination.

The latest pictures show the abandoned village buildings buried in the water being revealed and with them memories from the past.

The village of Kallio is situated in Fokida. In 1980, the construction of the Mornos dam led to the creation of an artificial lake, which submerged the original settlement.

Consequently, the village was relocated to a new site above the lake’s shores.

However, what’s particularly notable is that the old village of Kallio wasn’t permanently submerged under the lake’s waters.

In 1980, when the Mornos artificial lake was completed, the residents were compelled to relocate to a new settlement at an altitude of 390 meters.

However, the majority chose to move to Athens and other cities across the country.

Today, around 60 people remain in the new Kallio settlement, where they witness their childhood memories, belongings, and everything they left behind gradually resurface from the lake’s waters.

President of the community of Kallio Apostolis Gerodimos told protothema: “We have been experiencing such a situation since 1993. Since then 30 years have passed. Of course, the level in the lake was going down.

“It snowed and rained in the winter and as a consequence the water level was replenished. Now the situation is becoming a nightmare.

“As the water level drops, buildings from the submerged village will be revealed. If it doesn’t rain in winter the problem will become much bigger,” hoping “that we don’t relive what we experienced 30 years ago.”
